Fried Green Tomatoes

You've probably seen the movie.
I've seen it,  but about 10 years ago.
Honestly, I don't even remember why the movie is called "Fried Green Tomatoes".

Regardless if you've seen it or not, if you've never tried an actual fried green tomato, you're missing out.
I don't fry often.  In fact, I'd guess I've fried maybe 6 times since I've been married.
5 of those 6 times were making these tomatoes (the other time was frying avocadoes...maybe we'll chat about those another time)
You should try these.  They are super easy and so delicious.

First, you must find green tomatoes.  The more red they are, the harder they are to fry.  I found some good green ones in Kroger this weekend.

Here's what you need:

3-4 green tomatoes, sliced approx. 1/4 inch thick
1 cup flour, divided
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup of buttermilk or milk
salt and pepper
vegetable oil for frying

1.  Have your oil heating in a skillet.  I pour the oil up about 1/2 inch high.  Heat your oil on medium or a bit higher.  You don't want the oil to burn, but want it hot enough that the batter sizzles when you drop the tomato in.

2.  Mix egg and milk together in bowl.
3.  Mix 1/2 cup flour, sugar, and cornmeal together in bowl.  Add salt and pepper (about a tbsp. each).
4.  Pour rest of flour in another bowl.

5.  Dredge a tomato slice in flour, then in egg mixture, and then in flour, sugar, cornmeal mix.

6.  Place in hot skillet.  Let cook about 3 minutes on each side, until browned.

7.  Repeat with other tomatoes.  Don't crowd your pan. Just put 3-4 tomatoes in at a time.
8.  When they come out of the skillet, place slices on a paper towel and sprinkle with salt.

Absolutely delicious!
